The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000.

Technology is making more and more of a positive impact on modern life, particularly in the poorest regions of the world.

Nowhere is this more noticeable than with the events on the Caribbean country of Haiti, where hundreds and thousands of people have used social networking sites to relay news and messages of hope to worried loved ones.

One such story of hope involves U.S. filmmaker Dan Woolley, who was shooting a documentary about the impact of poverty in Haiti when the earthquake struck. He could have died, but he ultimately survived, with the help of an iPhone first-aid app, that taught him to treat his wounds.

Wired.com have a brilliant article on a man buried in Haiti rubble and how he used his iPhone to treat his wounds.

People are excited by news and interested in others, and this site is instant. You can tweet in the shower, having breakfast, on a flight(I think!) and so it’s attracted a lot of attention and become popular in this time, even superseding Facebook in the popularity stakes.

Twitter especially can be used for a variety of different and exciting reasons. Obama used this(amongst other online tools) to his advantage and his eventual election, by constantly interacting with his fans.

It’s also a great way to follow other designers/developers, see their interests and inspirations.

I got the book “Sleeveface – be the vinyl” for Christmas and was amazed at some of the brilliant ideas people have in creating another world beyond the record sleeve. It’s something anyone can do and I

What annoys you most about shopping? I was tuned into GMTV early one morning to listen to a great article on Customer Service. There was some really interesting facts. So few businesses really think about customer service, yet we all experience and complain about poor service. Poor service is just about becoming the norm. This also brings me to think about a Blog Entry on Eric Flannigan (Business Consultant) web site. Eric has some interesting thoughts on competing on service.

GMTV Wed 5th Nov 2008

Mintel’s “customer service in retailing”

Checkouts queues are the most annoying aspect of shopping in British stores, a customer survey says.

Three in five people (61%) say unstaffed checkouts are a major factor in poor customer service.
More than half (56%) of shoppers get irritated by the lack of staff available to help, according to researchers Mintel.
Shop assistants’ poor attitude to customer service is a negative factor for 58% of nearly 2,000 adults questioned.
One fifth (22%) of respondents have stopped using a retailer because of poor customer service.
Mintel senior retail analyst Neil Mason said it was false economy for stores not to have enough staff on the shop floor at peak times.

“Not only is goodwill being risked, but sales will be lost as customers will simply abandon their purchases rather than wait in a long queue to pay,” said.

A friendly welcome from staff and good product knowledge are named the two aspects of customer service which shoppers find most important in Mintel’s “customer service in retailing” report.

Putting customers first is a well-used mantra by retailers seeking to remain closely connected to what customers want. But, how good are multi-channel retailers at listening and incorporating what they hear into their service offer?

This report assesses how retailers are delivering service through stores and online, and identifies which retailers are perceived by shoppers to be performing well on customer service delivery. It provides an assessment of the attributes of the shopping experience that consumers see as being important, and provides insight into how retailers can improve their service delivery on these attributes.

If you are interested in why us guys wear the clothes we do, and how these fashions originated then find a moment to watch:- British Style Genius: Loud and Proud – The Street Look. It’s surprisingly compulsive viewing and a brilliant insight into sixties culture. Full of old footage it’s often very funny. I had no idea the original skin heads took the look from the American Astronauts of the late sixties.

Meet the original Teds, who adopted the flamboyant Edwardian-style suits favoured by post-war Guards officers, while the original Mods show how they patched together influences from American jazz, French arthouse cinema and Italian cafe culture to create a sharper look. There’s a look at the hidden subtleties behind the 1970s skinhead style, with its militaristic, boots-meets-Ben Sherman look, and we see how the European sportswear-influenced 1980s street style took its inspiration from the tennis courts and sowed the seeds of a label obsession that still dominates the street look today.
